We wanted to provide you a Step-by-Step Guide to both New Construction and Remodeling, from Permits to finishing touches!

Embarking on a new construction project or remodeling your existing space can be a thrilling journey. To ensure a successful outcome, it's crucial to have a clear understanding of the sequence in which various phases should occur. This keeps a project moving in an efficient manner and as seamless as possible so that you don't waste any unnecessary time or money. If you think about it... wouldn't you really love if a contractor walked in and got fresh paint on your brand new hardwood floors? That's exactly why order matters!

In Part 1 of this Construction Process Guide, we'll take you through the step-by-step process, from obtaining permits to adding those finishing touches of shower or backsplash work. Next week, we will follow up with Part 2 to complete it all!

Permits

Before you can break ground or expand your current residence securing the necessary permits is your first task. These permits are your ticket to ensuring that your project aligns with local building codes and regulations. Not all jobs require permitting, but your contractor will be able to guide you in obtaining all the correct information for your project.

New Construction: Site Work

Site preparation is the initial physical step in your project. This phase includes clearing the area, grading the land, and setting the foundation for proper drainage. Site work provides a solid and level playing field for your construction efforts.

Remodeling: Demolition

For remodeling projects, demolition typically follows permitting or is the first step, if permits are not required for your project. It involves the removal of existing structures or elements that are no longer needed. Proper disposal and recycling of materials are important considerations during this phase.

Foundation

After the site work has been completed or the demolition has commenced, the foundation will be addressed (only if needed for remodels). The foundation is the very backbone of your structure. It provides stability and support for everything that follows. The foundation can be a concrete slab, crawl space, or basement, depending on your project's specifications. If starting fresh with new construction or making necessary adjustments for a remodel process, the foundation is arguably the most crucial step to ensure everyone is safe and sound for the test of time as your home settles.

Framing

Framing is the construction of the basic skeleton of your building. It includes the erection of walls, floors, and roofs. The framing phase ensures that everything is level and correctly aligned. Exteriors

Roofing, Gutters, siding, doors + Windows, Paint

In the world of construction and remodeling, it's not just about what's inside but also what surrounds us. From giving a facelift to an existing home to crafting the perfect exterior for a new construction, these trades shape the first impression and overall charm of any space. Some exterior trades include: Roofing, gutters, siding, exterior doors and windows and exterior paint.

MEPs: Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing

Electrical and Plumbing:

With the framing in place, it's time to rough-in the electrical and plumbing systems. Electricians will install wiring, outlets, switches, and electrical panels, while plumbers will set up the essential water supply and drainage systems.

HVAC + Insulation

Insulation plays a vital role in temperature control and energy efficiency within your space. Proper insulation helps maintain comfort and can lead to long-term energy savings.

Drywall + Backer Board

The drywall installation phase covers the framed structure with interior walls and ceilings. Once installed, drywall can be finished, painted, or decorated according to your preferences. Backer board is like drywall for wet spaces. During this phase, showers go through a waterproofing process to make sure to keep your structure from being subjected to leaks and water issues that eventually lead to mold.

In conclusion, understanding the order of the construction and remodeling process is key to a successful project. From permits to site work, demolition to foundation, framing to the final touches of tile work and backsplashes, each step builds upon the last, creating a safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing space. Keep in mind that professional expertise can greatly impact the quality and efficiency of your project. With this step-by-step guide, you'll be well-prepared to embark on your next construction or remodeling adventure with confidence.
